3 STEPS to Start a Business

I remember when I was trying to figure out the first steps to start a business.

I did what any normal person would do...

Talk about overwhelming.

Over 13 BILLION results!

There was so much stuff out there!! (The internet is crazy, y'all)

So then, I scrolled down and looked for the highlights.

But that list also made my dream feel super daunting.

So can I alleviate some headache for you, friend?

If you're just looking for the very first three steps you need to get established as a business, I got you.

The Google search image above where it says, Conduct market research, write a business plan, yatta yatta...

That stuff is good and all, but some of those are brainstorming activities and they don't actually get you set up as a business.

What I'm saying is, don't get hung up if you don't have a proper business plan, or haven't done a ton of market research, or if you don't have start-up money stacked in the bank...

It's still possible to pursue your dreams and get paid for doing the work you love to do.

And, not everyone needs all of that... but EVERYONE most definitely needs what I share here.

Practically speaking, this video explains the first three steps you need to take to turn your passion into a legitimate business.

Like I said in the video, it's easy to get overwhelmed with ALL the things but if you just focus on the next 2 or 3 steps, all of those steps lead up to major progress.

Here are some common questions that may be running through your head right now...

  1. Do I need a business plan?

  2. Do I need to be fully funded?

  3. Do I need a website?

  4. After these steps, then what?

In short,

  1. No

  2. No

  3. Yes

  4. A Lot

If you want the longer answers, keep reading...

No. You don't need a business to start building your dream.

Now, I say no, but there are some instances where a business plan is necessary (or even required) before some people can actually start building their business.

When there are more complex factors involved like investors, partners, intellectual property, contracts, and so on. Basically, when you have a lot of moving parts or hands in the kitchen, then a business plan helps to lay out the game plan with all details clearly laid out for all parties to agree on.

But if it's just you right now, and you're looking for a simple start, a business plan shouldn't hold you back from getting a move on building your dream.

As your business grows, there may be a time when you need to come back and revisit this, but you can cross that bridge when necessary.

Are you kidding me?!

Do you know how many entrepreneurs started with NO money?

Here's the thing, in a perfect world you would be able to save up before taking the leap of faith. Or you get a lump sum of money from a loving relative to start building your dream. Or whatever your perfect secure scenario is... that would be awesome.

But if that's not your reality (I can tell you, it definitely wasn't mine) it should NOT hold you back from building your dream.

No need to open a whole bunch of credit cards, you don't go into debt when you're starting out.

If you,

  • keep things simple

  • keep your costs low

  • and set up your income streams the smart way from the very beginning

You'll be just fine!

Yeap! Most definitely.

Your website is your digital footprint in the world.

And let's face it, everyone is making decisions based on the research they find on the internet.

Isn't that how you landed here?

Your website is how your customers learn more about your products/services, find out more about you, pay you, sign up for your newsletter - basically it's how they engage with your business.

Don't worry, it doesn't have to be a high-tech-super-buff site.

Keep it simple first and get fancy later.

In my opinion, Wix is the best platform to build your website if you want to save time, money, and don't know how to code.

First, get those three items done that I mentioned in the video.

  1. Register your business with the state

  2. Get your EIN on IRS.gov

  3. Open a business banking account

And then, whatever specific requirements you need to have in place for your business (or niche or industry), get those done.

This could be certifications, equipment, product, storefront... You know what those must-haves are.

Once you have all of this foundational stuff done, your website would be the next top priority.

You got this, friend
