I always get asked, "So, Karen, what do you do?" Which is typically followed by a long-winded explanation because I do sooo much.
I wish I could say something simple like:
I'm the VP of Marketing for XYZ.
I'm an astronaut.
I make safety containers for babies.
I invented the ________.
Ahhh, if only it were that simple.
But for me, being an entrepreneur has a lot of layers to it. The only common denominator that's remained the same is my heart for helping people be their best.
So, recently I decided that instead of trying to explain what I do, I need to do a better job showing you what I do (which means you can definitely expect a lot more behind-the-scenes posts).
And, I'll be honest, I'm partially creating this article for my parents who still have trouble understanding exactly what it is I do.
Bless their hearts, it's not their fault. Trying to explain my work to anyone who isn’t in this entrepreneurial world (or under the age of 50) can be hard to do.
So let's get into it...
WHAT'S MY BUSINESS?
The short answer is, this.
The very website you're on right now, this is my business.
I use it as a hub to share my knowledge of the entrepreneurial and digital marketing world with people who are looking to launch and build their dream business.

HERE'S THE SCOOP:
MY PURPOSE (Why I do what I do)
When I started, I just wanted to take something bad (my hubby's sudden death) and turn it into something good so I could be an example to my son that life is what you make it.
Now, I'm teaching others to do the same - how to build a life they love.
I never really wanted to become a counselor or life coach, even though that's what people kept projecting on me. I simply wanted to share tips from my personal experience and deliver hope laced with super-effective action steps, whether on-stage or online.
Honestly, I just wanted to create content that was helpful to people.
I knew over time that would mean that I'd need to create paid content. Like an online course, workshops, or an ebook. (Essspecially once I realized that it takes a while to get established as a paid speaker.)
But building a brand, like anything else, takes time.
So, to keep the lights on and food on the table, I started freelancing and working with folks in their business.
Let me explain the kind of services I provide...
Right now I make money three ways:
Speaking at events, conferences, and retreats
Providing strategy + coaching services to newbie entrepreneurs
Creating content (email marketing, social media, web, etc...) as a freelancer
Sidenote: this is suuuper brand new, I just launched my first online program that I'm proud of - Passion & Profit. Pop the champagne and cue the sparklers! Plus, I'm working on an ebook that’s an affordable option for newbies who want to follow my strategies to grow faster.
Now let me say, I’m super grateful that I'm able to do some of the work I love.
Like speaking at conferences and events. I love inspiring audiences and educating them on the power of the mindset (and recently I've added entrepreneurship to my list of speaking topics). Speaking on stages is like breathing to me - it just feels natural.
And being able to work one-on-one with truly amazing people, developing strategies to help them launch their passion or level up their brand, that totally fills me up!
Even creating free content that guides people to start their dream business. Sharing tips and tools that I KNOW will help make your life easier gives me a ton of energy.

But here’s the kicker… a lot of my time is spent on creating free content! Mainly because that’s what’s going to help me grow my business and achieve the bigger goals that I have for my brand.
But offering a whole bunch of free content doesn’t pay the bills.
So… I freelance and provide content creation services to make the money I need to keep doing the work I love to do.
Now… a lot of people think that THIS is my business.
The service that I provide to people.
But here’s the deal…
I don’t want to be a freelancer forever. I especially don’t want to be working with clients in their social media and content creation - which is where I spend a lot of my time. (And I’m putting that out there to help manifest it.)
I don't work with just anyone. The client has to be legit, meaning someone who is willing to pay for my services. And I only work with people who have a business I believe in and it has to be someone that I HONESTLY want to work with.
I've had to politely turn down opportunities, all for different reasons, but mainly because I believe when you say No to something that isn't right for you, you're in a better place to say Yes to the opportunities that are meant for you.
To have that kind of clarity, you gotta know what sets your soul on fire. What work do you love to do?

At the core of my business is the work I LOVE to do: educating and empowering entrepreneurs to turn their passion into a profitable business, enabling them to have the impact on the world that they were created to have.

This is my jaaaaam!
I talk about all things digital marketing, blogging, social media, email marketing, personal development and of course, setting up those income streams!
I love creating How-To content here on my blog and on my YouTube channel. That’s really my passion and drive behind my whole brand.
I help people understand the digital marketing world through the resources that I create on my website, YouTube channel, and other social media accounts.
But there's more, this is my vision...
MY VISION (Where I want to take this thing)
Over the next couple of years, you'll see me working hard to build a robust platform that helps people launch their passion, build a strong mindset, and live a full life.
You'll see blog posts, resources, and YouTube videos to provide information for free.
I'm also creating a variety of courses for people who want to learn even more and see results faster. (Passion & Profit is the first of many!)
I most definitely will be hosting a retreat, that's the ultimate dream right there! And I'm most excited about the collective (team of experts) who will bring their magic to the retreat to help produce real transformation during our time together. We'll cover everything that revolves around business ownership, building a brand, self-care and personal development, and all of that!
Basically, I want to make more of an impact on a larger scale.
I want to speak on more stages and reach more people, and seriously, just make a big freakin’ difference in the lives of people that need it.
Because I was that person not too long ago.
On the other side of this...
I'm so freakin' passionate about this work because I want to build a legacy for my son. Like I said from the very beginning, my goal is to be an example to him that when life hands you lemons you can make lemonade.
So as the success of my business grows, so will our philanthropic outreach. My mission to change the world doesn't stop with my customers.
The ultimate goal is to use our income to make an impact. My family is dedicated to empowering and aiding widows and orphans around the globe, and a portion of every sale will go to support philanthropic projects both domestically and abroad.
